PYTHON course for QGIS
in SYNCHRONOUS mode

This course is intended for users who already have a good familiarity with the basic use of QGIS and some fundamental knowledge of Python.

In particular, participants are expected to have:

  • The ability to use the QGIS interface (navigation, layer management, and main tools)
  • Experience importing and managing geographic data (shapefiles, raster datasets, and other vector formats)
  • Familiarity with spatial analysis tools and the use of expressions (Field Calculator, filters, etc.)

As for Python, advanced experience is not required, but some basic practical knowledge is recommended.

During the course, participants will complete exercises of increasing difficulty, and additional assignments will be provided for independent study to reinforce the concepts covered.

Participants are also required to install a code editor in advance, such as VS Code or Cursor. If needed, we will provide instructions for installation and configuration before the course begins.

The online lessons are delivered live by the instructor.

All lessons will also be recorded and made available to participants at any time until 30 days after the end of the course.

You will find a prerequisite questionnaire alongside this page. It is a self-assessment test designed to help you evaluate your current level of knowledge before starting the course.

The test is not mandatory and will not affect your enrollment. Its purpose is simply to help you better understand your starting skill level.

  • What is Python: the difference between low-level and high-level programming languages; why choose Python (pros and cons)
  • Printing to the terminal with print()
  • Variables: definition and usage, user input, multiple assignments
  • Principles of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)
  • Other basic data structures: lists, tuples, dictionaries, and sets
  • Control flow: Boolean operators, if-elif-else statements, for loops, and while loops

  • Functions: definition and variables
  • Classes: class definition and constructors
  • Practical exercises

Friday July 17th 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

  • Introduction to QGIS plugins
  • Plugin Builder and Plugin Reloader: creating a plugin and setting up pyrcc5
  • Plugin installation
  • Qt Designer: quick start, creating a first user interface, using widgets, managing layouts and spacers

  • Review of plugin functionalities
  • Implementation of GIS functionalities within a QGIS plugin

Friday July 31st 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Duration: 2 hours

Topics:

  • OGR: reading and writing vector files; managing and querying vector datasets; overview of the OGR class structure
  • OGR: reading Shapefile attributes, feature filtering, data export, and geometry manipulation
  • OGR: introduction to geometry handling (points, lines, and polygons)
  • OGR: introduction to spatial analysis, including overlay tools and proximity tools

Friday August 7th 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Duration: 2 hours

Topics:

  • GDAL: reading raster data, dataset handling, and resampling
  • GDAL: raster processing, histograms, introduction to the VRT format
  • Map algebra with NumPy
  • Map classification: introduction to supervised and unsupervised classification
  • Data visualization with Matplotlib
