REMOT

Miniaturized and wearable device

What is remot?

The Real Environment MOvement Tracker (REMOT) is a miniaturized and wearable device enabling the tracking of the kinematics of the Gait and more in general of the movement of a person during his real life outdoor activities. Such a device will improve the current state of the art in optimizing the diagnosis of postural diseases or Musculo-Skeletal Disorders.

The idea

The main idea behind REMOT project is to develop a low cost wearable device suitable to provide accurate measurements of the kinematic of the human Gait and more in general of the human movement in a real life environment and in normotype condition.

According to the current state of the art, such measurements are already available but only in indoor laboratory environment or in outdoor normal life condition for a short lapse of time.

The goal of REMOT is to overcome all these limitations providing an innovative device to physiotherapists and sport trainers.

Physiotherapists and sports doctors are interested in knowing how the “range of movements” of the joints involved in the activity changes. By way of example, these activities can be: a walk, a run, a strength session in the gym, a shift of a worker who works outdoors with methodical and repetitive gestures.

So by measuring the position and variations in positions of the joints and the articular segments involved in the movements, we can relate the overall movement with efficiency, fatigue, muscle work, physiological functions (e.g. heart rate). This will facilitate the professional’s interpretation of the patient’s state of health or performance capacity.

Technology

The enabling technology of REMOT innovative capabilities is based on GNSS and IMU sensor fusion. In the Gait analysis such an approach, extensively and successfully tested in precise navigation application, allows to synchronize lots of wearable sensors. The adopted technology will support accurate measurements in terms of 3D position in real environment and for the whole duration of the activity.

Fields of application

HEALTH

Today the physiotherapist is a highly specialized professional. He is an expert in moving safely and without fear of the patient who has received treatment for pathologies in very different areas (neurology, orthopedics, cardiology, endocrinology, psychiatry, etc. )

The area of musculoskeletal disorders affecting cervical pain, low back pain, hip pain, patello femoral pain, ankle sprain is very vast.
All these conditions modify motor control by limiting the patient’s autonomy. To bring the patient back to his autonomy, manual work and therapeutic exercise strategies based on systems for evaluating outcome measures with high precision and reliability are fundamental.

SPORT

Supporting physician and trainers in improve athletes performances.

In high-level sport there is an absolute need to study the individual subject to adapt the science of sport to the characteristics of the individual athlete. This makes it possible to achieve the best short, medium and long-term work program through ad-hoc strategies derived from the performance model.

REMOT will enable a step forward in the direction of accurate motion analysis and will improve the dialogue between figures working for world-class results. It will open to further possible discoveries by relating mechanical and physiological parameters.
